An image SCP-396 taken by MTF Epsilon-6 after initial aquisition (Δ-2)

Item #: SCP-396

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: Due to the temporal nature of the anomaly, functional containment of SCP-396 is the most effective method of containing SCP-396. Should SCP-396 escape containment, extreme recontainment efforts are suggested to mitigate subsequent retrocausal containment breaches.

A Caesium-133 clock has been embedded alongside a GPS geolocator to track the oldest known version of SCP-396 — this is not extremely effective, as SCP-396 may displace with a version before the implementation of these containment procedures.1

Description: SCP-396 is a temporal anomaly localized to a plastic chair that is experiencing erratic chronodisplacement along its own timeline. These displacements have been designated Δ-Events and display Poissonian2 characteristics, giving the duration between temporal displacements an exponential distribution. These durations are correlated with an exponential increase in magnitude of spatio-temporal displacement. Naturally, this property of SCP-396 means it will breach containment if no displacement occurs within ~15 seconds.

Despite the temporal anomaly, there has never been a reported case of multiple SCP-396 instances simultaneously — it has been proposed that Δ-Events come in pairs, with a "future" SCP-396 swapping with another "past" SCP-396, though its position in space is not conserved3.

Discovery Log: SCP-396 was first discovered by the Foundation when it manifested within Foundation custody on 1991/03/07 within an unused containment cell for anomalous artifacts within Site-██. After filing an unusual incident report and detailing the appearance of the object, SCP-396 demanifested. MTF Epsilon-6 "Village Idiots" were dispatched to locate and contain SCP-396, which was discovered at a location 15 km away from Site-██. Transport to the site took over 60 hours as SCP-396's anomalous effects activated during transit multiple times.

Addendum 396.1 — Material Analysis:
Analysis of the structure, materials, and attached barcode of SCP-396 has yielded information as to SCP-396's manufacturer, date of creation, and, potentially, origin. SCP-396 was created by the manufacturer Nozaki-Nakada and was then transported to a distribution center in the United States, which was then bought by PoI-881 (Eric Duggal) for personal use. Analysis of DNA on SCP-396 confirmed PoI-881's involvement with SCP-396.

Addendum 396.2 — PoI-881 Autopsy Report:
After the discovery of his purchase of SCP-396, Foundation agents were dispatched to PoI-881's home to conduct an interview and β-amnectication procedure. However, upon arrival of Foundation personnel, PoI-881 was found to be deceased.
