Universal Worm Death

Item #: SCP-5540

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: Worms1 must not enter Site-107 under any circumstances. While wildlife in the region is minimal, attempts to reduce accidental intrusion have been made by excavating and encompassing the facility exterior in concrete. The concrete is arranged in interlocking prestressed blocks, as to reduce the likelihood of singular cracks spreading and compromising integrity. Three layers of blocks are present. Radio sensors are embedded at regular intervals in the innermost layer and are set to trigger if a specialized chemical compound2 is detected; as this compound is cast within each innermost block, detection would suggest an intrusion or high-importance breach. Compound toxicity is also intended to disable the nervous systems of entering organisms.

Each floor of Site-107 has been flooded in reihainite3 mixed with neurotoxins, forming an encasement to restrain SCP-5540-1 and further harm any intrusive organisms. While the absence of extant earthworms presumably negates the chance of an entropic chain reaction, no liquid water4 is to be introduced to the area under any conditions.

The facility entrance is locked and welded shut. Any ingress requires Level 5/5540 approval.

It is unknown if SCP-5540 is a purely isolated incident.

Description: SCP-5540 is an entropic phenomenon where the waste energy of a given system spontaneously converts into earthworms.5 The mass and quantity of earthworms is not inherently correlated to the amount of energy in question. On occurrence of an SCP-5540 event, the probability of further events occurring nearby6 increases.
