SCP-3798

Item #: SCP-3798

Object Class: Euclid Neutralized

Special Containment Procedures: Fernandina Island has been evacuated and closed off from all civilian access. Various plankton- and cyanobacteria-consuming species of sea life have been introduced to the waters around the island (see Document 3798-AQ for a detailed list), and are to be constantly monitored.

As of 1/06/2011, SCP-3798 remains quarantined, and all active volcanoes are to be monitored for similar activity.

Description: SCP-3798 is the shield volcano La Cumbre located on Fernandina Island, an island in the Galápagos archipelago. SCP-3798's vent is partially sealed by rock; lava continuously exits through two dikes located on the southwest side of the cone. This lava is composed of iron, nickel, sodium, aluminum, and small amounts of heavy metals including osmium, iridium, and platinum. However, it exits the volcano at a constant temperature of 29°C and remains in its liquid state indefinitely.

Upon making physical contact with the ocean, this lava emits large amounts of steam and transmutes into an equivalent mass of assorted phytoplankton and cyanobacteria.

SCP-3798-1 denotes the variety of animalian creatures composed of rocks and crystals that sporadically emerge from the top of SCP-3798. SCP-3798-1 instances corresponding to extinct animals will wade into the lava streams after a variable amount of time, at which point their constituent minerals melt and dissolve into the stream. Remaining instances of SCP-3798 wander the island but behave similarly to their nonanomalous counterparts, and dissolve into dust and smoke after a variable time period, within 3 to 37 days thus far.

On 01/04/2010, a small tremor on SCP-3798's island led to the formation of a large opening, approximately 20m in diameter, at the base of the cone. Lava with similar properties to the other two dikes began flowing from this hole. Additionally, a large number of SCP-3798-1 instances emerged, all bearing resemblance to animal life spanning the Oligocene to mid-Cretaceous eras. Unlike before, these instances did not dissolve in the lava.

Mobile Task Force Phi-2 ("Clever Girls") was deployed to explore the opening.

Following the eruption of SCP-3798, all lava flow has ceased. Fernandina Island itself has sunk 200m in elevation, causing seawater to flow into the three dikes and generating large amounts of steam that currently prevent further exploration.

As no new instances of SCP-3798-1 have emerged, SCP-3798 has been tentatively declared Neutralized.
