Item #: SCP-3798
Object Class: Euclid Neutralized
Special Containment Procedures: Fernandina Island has been evacuated and closed off from all civilian access. Various plankton- and cyanobacteria-consuming species of sea life have been introduced to the waters around the island (see Document 3798-AQ for a detailed list), and are to be constantly monitored.
As of 1/06/2011, SCP-3798 remains quarantined, and all active volcanoes are to be monitored for similar activity.
Description: SCP-3798 is the shield volcano La Cumbre located on Fernandina Island, an island in the Galápagos archipelago. SCP-3798's vent is partially sealed by rock; lava continuously exits through two dikes located on the southwest side of the cone. This lava is composed of iron, nickel, sodium, aluminum, and small amounts of heavy metals including osmium, iridium, and platinum. However, it exits the volcano at a constant temperature of 29°C and remains in its liquid state indefinitely.
Upon making physical contact with the ocean, this lava emits large amounts of steam and transmutes into an equivalent mass of assorted phytoplankton and cyanobacteria.
SCP-3798-1 denotes the variety of animalian creatures composed of rocks and crystals that sporadically emerge from the top of SCP-3798. SCP-3798-1 instances corresponding to extinct animals will wade into the lava streams after a variable amount of time, at which point their constituent minerals melt and dissolve into the stream. Remaining instances of SCP-3798 wander the island but behave similarly to their nonanomalous counterparts, and dissolve into dust and smoke after a variable time period, within 3 to 37 days thus far.
On 01/04/2010, a small tremor on SCP-3798's island led to the formation of a large opening, approximately 20m in diameter, at the base of the cone. Lava with similar properties to the other two dikes began flowing from this hole. Additionally, a large number of SCP-3798-1 instances emerged, all bearing resemblance to animal life spanning the Oligocene to mid-Cretaceous eras. Unlike before, these instances did not dissolve in the lava.
Mobile Task Force Phi-2 ("Clever Girls") was deployed to explore the opening.

Exploration Team: Mobile Task Force Phi-2 ("Clever Girls")
Subject: SCP-3798
Team Lead: Φ-2 Marquez
Team Members: Φ-2 Iglesias, Φ-2 Nunez, Φ-2 De la CruzNotes: MTF Phi-2 was tasked to enter the new opening in SCP-3798 and explore as much as possible. All team members were equipped with standard issue tracking devices, body cameras, microphones, and high power flashlights, in addition to Phi-2's standard weapons and armor.
[BEGIN LOG]
Command: Proceed when ready.Φ-2 Marquez: Moving in.
Φ-2 Iglesias: This is a weird sensation, walking through lava like nothing.
Φ-2 Nunez: Admit it, you've always wondered what it would be like.
Φ-2 Marquez: Not really, no.
Φ-2 Nunez: Just me? OK.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Save your energy, guys. It's gonna be a real long hike back up.
(Four minutes of walking.)
Command: Moving object, 20 meters ahead.
(An SCP-3798-1 instance appears in the distance. It resembles a large wolf (Canis dirus), with a body mostly made of fine gray stone fragments, and small emeralds for eyes.)
Φ-2 Marquez: Hold.
Φ-2 Nunez: Engage?
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Wait. It doesn't even seem to notice us.
(The SCP-3798-1 instance moves between Φ-2 Marquez and Φ-2 Iglesias without incident and continues outward.)
Φ-2 Nunez: Welp. So it's just a nature hike, then.
Φ-2 Marquez: Stay vigilant, Ursula.
(The team continues for 2 minutes.)
Φ-2 Iglesias: Is it just me or is this tunnel getting wider?
Φ-2 De la Cruz: No, it's the tunnel.
Φ-2 Marquez: Up ahead.
(A SCP-3798-1 instance appears, resembling a 2m tall, bipedal flightless bird.)
Φ-2 Nunez: Oh hell no. Not this bastard again.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Aw man, you had to remind me of that.
Φ-2 Marquez: It's not the same damn bird, or we'd all be on the floor by now. Let it pass.
(The instance looks briefly at each MTF member, then continues towards the tunnel exit.)
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Go on, scram!
(The team continues for approximately 10 minutes. The lava stream now reaches the height of the team's ankles, and the walls of the tunnel contain small crystalline growths from this point on.)
Command: Can you retrieve a sample of the crystal?
Φ-2 Nunez: Sure thing. (Φ-2 Nunez breaks off a small piece and places it into a pouch on her belt.) Looks like emerald, but you never know.
Φ-2 Iglesias: How deep does this thing go? Wait —
Φ-2 Nunez: That's what she said!
Φ-2 Iglesias: Dammit!
Φ-2 Marquez: Come on, guys. Act your age.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: OK. Maybe it's just me, but it feels a bit warmer in here.
(A large SCP-3798-1 instance emerges about 20m away from the team, resembling a Paraceratherium1 composed of sandstone.)
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Whoa, that's a big one. Stay on guard, everyone.
Command: Sensors show additional instances incoming.
Φ-2 Iglesias: Behind you!
(Three SCP-3798-1 instances form out of the cave wall, all resembling Smilodon2.)
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Thanks, Angie. (Φ-2 De la Cruz shoots one of the instances in its head, causing it to rapidly lose cohesion and crumble to rocks and dust.)
(The remaining two Smilodon instances walk around the Φ-2 members and attempt to corner the Paraceratherium instance.)
Φ-2 Iglesias: Yeah, they're ignoring us.
Φ-2 Nunez: For now.
(The Paraceratherium instance succeeds in trampling one Smilodon, causing it to disintegrate, as the second Smilodon leaps and bites the Paraceratherium on the neck, causing it to collapse to the ground and disintegrate as well. The Smilodon turns and attempts to exit the tunnel but is destroyed by Φ-2 Marquez.)
Φ-2 Marquez: Nice try.
(The team continues. At this point, the tunnel has reached an approximate diameter of 40m. The lava stream is approximately 8m wide, and 1m deep, and the team walks along the 'riverbanks' of the rock floor. The tunnel is now lined in its entirety with various crystals, and seams of metallic deposits are visible from this point. All visible crystal lodes have begun to pulse with multicolored light.)
Φ-2 Iglesias: Wait.
Φ-2 Nunez: What's up?
Φ-2 Iglesias: Do you hear that?
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Shhhh.
(A low, rhythmic vibration is heard.)
Φ-2 Iglesias: It's thumping in rhythym. Like, footsteps, or a heartbeat.
Φ-2 Nunez: Ooh, spooky.
Φ-2 Iglesias: Grow up.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: I hear it too?
Φ-2 Marquez: Me too.
Φ-2 Nunez: Same. Yo, command, any idea where it's coming from?
Command: (static) No. (static) — not sensing any activity near you, though (static) the rock is beginning to interfere with the signal.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Look. The river flow is getting wider and faster.
Φ-2 Nunez: Yeah.
(The team continues on. The tunnel continues to widen gradually.)
Φ-2 Marquez: Hold on. You see that up ahead?
Φ-2 Iglesias: It's a second tunnel, branching off of this one.
Φ-2 Marquez: Right, but look. The lava in that river is flowing down, right next to the lava flowing up on our river. If we can get over there and break off a piece of rock, we can just raft our way down and save ourselves some effort.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Sounds kinda risky. Base, how's the flow look up ahead?
Command: (static) As far as we can tell, uniform slope and no major obstructions for the next kilometer or so.
Φ-2 Nunez: I say we do it.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Alright then. There's a nice flat one over there.
(The team manages to find a suitable rock, and Φ-2 Nunez and Φ-2 Marquez break it loose. An armored, quadrupedal SCP-3798-1 instance manifests on the roof of the tunnel, while a second instance appears from up the branch tunnel. Both instances are about 10m long, and appear reptilian, with a tyrannosaur-like head, broad torso, short hind legs, and large, muscular front legs with sapphire claws. The instances rapidly approach the team, moving with a gait similar to that of a gorilla. Between armor plates made of basalt, the skin of each instance appears to be magma.)
Φ-2 De la Cruz: The hell kinda dinosaur are those?!
Φ-2 Marquez: Doesn't matter! (Φ-2 Marquez fires at the claw of the instance on the roof, shattering one of it's claws and causing it to lose its grip and fall to the floor of the tunnel.)
Φ-2 Nunez: Angie, with me! (Φ-2 Nunez and Iglesias concentrate fire on the second instance, which changes path towards them.)
Φ-2 Iglesias: The rock armor is too thick. Distract it, I've got an idea.
Φ-2 Nunez: Last time you said that I almost got eaten.
Φ-2 Iglesias: But it worked, didn't it? That T-rex minotaur never knew what hit it.
(Φ-2 Marquez evades a strike from the first instance, as Φ-2 De la Cruz continues to fire at its arms.)
(Φ-2 Iglesias pulls the second gun on her back.)
Φ-2 Nunez: Really, the 'chancla'?
Φ-2 Iglesias: It's not called that for nothing. Give me an opening!
Φ-2 Nunez: You got it.
(Φ-2 Nunez runs underneath the SCP-3798-1, firing at the inside of the back left leg. The leg partially crumbles, and the instance staggers and falls to the ground.)
(Φ-2 Iglesias runs up the instance's back and fires her sonic gun at the base of its neck multiple times, causing part of it to disintegrate. Φ-2 Nunez continues to fire at the neck until the instance disintegrates.)
Φ-2 Marquez: It's tougher than it looks!
(The instance swats away Φ-2 Marquez's gun and pins Φ-2 De la Cruz to the wall with its free hand.)
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Dammit, Viv, get me loose!
(The instance opens its mouth and roars at Φ-2 De la Cruz. Φ-2 Marquez throws a grenade into its mouth, which explodes and destroys the instance's throat and lower jaw.)
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Whew. Thanks, man.
(Φ-2 Marquez crushes the rest of the instance's skull with a broken stalagmite.)
Φ-2 Marquez: Now you can thank me.
Φ-2 Nunez: (Takes a deep breath.) Where were we?
Φ-2 De la Cruz: About to raft a river of lava.
Φ-2 Iglesias: Some days, I love my job.
(The team begins to descend the river, using crystal stalagmites as oars. The tunnel continues to widen.)
Φ-2 Nunez: Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream.
Φ-2 Iglesias: The thumping is getting louder.
Φ-2 Marquez: Then we'll finally see what's causing it. Keep it steady.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: One o'clock.
(An SCP-3798-1 instance emerges from the parallel uphill lava stream. This instance resembles a Stegosaurus and is composed mostly of black rock fragments, with lines of magma running down its length, and diamond thagomizers, eyes, and back plates. The instance walks slowly towards them.)
Φ-2 Iglesias: Aww. Can we keep it?
Φ-2 Marquez: No.
Φ-2 Iglesias: Can we at least try to ride it and get it to carry us the rest of the way?
Φ-2 Marquez: Hmm, let me think about it.
Φ-2 Iglesias: Really —
Φ-2 Marquez: No.
(The Stegosaurus instance walks past them and up the tunnel.)
(The tunnel widens and eventually opens into a large, roughly hemispherical cavern estimated at over 1km in diameter. The bottom half of this cavern is filled with bubbling magma, and a large rock, approximately 150m long, protrudes from the center of the pool. Large stalactites composed of various minerals and crystals are present on the roof of the cavern. Several hundred SCP-3798-1 instances fly around the cavern, resembling pterosaurs, large birds, and oversized insects.)
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Here we are, Girls. End of the line.
Command: (static) — unknown masses — (static) beneath surface — (static)
Φ-2 Nunez: Shit. Are they moving?
Φ-2 Iglesias: Thumping's getting real loud in here. Like a parade marching.
Φ-2 Nunez: Let's jump in.
(Φ-2 Marquez begins to wade into the magma, followed by Φ-2 De la Cruz.)
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Hmm, the magma's warmer than it was when we first entered.
Φ-2 Iglesias: Look!
(A large school of SCP-3798-1 instances swim near the team before exiting into the lava stream. These instances are composed of glowing white magma, and resemble Cambrian life forms, specifically Opabinia, Habelia, Anomalocaris, and Hurdia3.)
Φ-2 Marquez: Spread out. Iglesias, take outer left. Nunez, outer right. De la Cruz, with me, and we'll all converge on the opposite side.
Φ-2 Iglesias: Whoa.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: You alright?
Φ-2 Iglesias: I'm fine, just lost my footing. There's some weird raised rock beneath the surface.
Φ-2 Marquez: We'll keep an eye out.
Φ-2 Nunez: Oh man. It's way warmer on the higher spots.
Φ-2 Marquez: Can you continue?
Φ-2 Nunez: Yeah, I can go around em.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Can never be too careful. Viv, can you maneuver over to that giant rock?
Φ-2 Marquez: It's hotter in that area, but I'll get as close as I can.
(Φ-2 Marquez diverts course towards the large rock. As she approaches the edge of the rock, a large tremor occurs, and waves of magma emanate from the rock. A large turtle-shaped entity, approximately 45m long, briefly surfaces in the magma before submerging again.)
(All team members are thrown about by the waves and pushed away from the rock.)
Φ-2 Marquez: Shit!
(Φ-2 Iglesias coughs up magma, with significant difficulty.)
Φ-2 Iglesias: God, that was not pleasant. Everyone okay?
Φ-2 Nunez: Yup.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Mostly.
Φ-2 Marquez: Look.
(The rock cracks in several places. Four holes appear in the rock; two on each side, and two close together on the front. Each of the holes glows a bright yellow.)
Φ-2 Iglesias: Uh —
(The rock rises from the surrounding magma and cracks further. The magma filling the chamber begins to churn.)
Φ-2 Nunez: Run! Or swim!
(A large pillar of magma rises from the surface, carrying the rock upwards. Further cracks appear in the rock until it begins to resemble the head of a large snake.)
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Madre de Dios.
(Protrusions in the magma solidify and darken slightly, and can now be identified as coiled portions of the body of the snake, approximately 100m in diameter. Reviews of the footage estimate that up to 90% of the snake's body lies beneath the surface. The body now blocks the main tunnel exit.)
Φ-2 Marquez: Oh, fuck.
(A large, glowing globule of magma drips from the snake's 'eye'. When this globule makes contact with the surface of the pool, it forms the shape of a theropod dinosaur resembling Giganotosaurus but measuring over 25m in length.)
Φ-2 Nunez: Oh, come on!
(The snake releases two another globule, that forms a pliosaur4 over 35m in length. The pliosaur swims beneath the surface of the lava.)
Φ-2 Marquez: Wonderful.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: We gotta get the snake to unblock the entrance, somehow.
Φ-2 Nunez: While not getting chomped by the biggest dinos we've ever seen.
Φ-2 Iglesias: Pliosaurs aren't technically —
Φ-2 Marquez: Not the time!
Φ-2 De la Cruz: I've got a plan.
Φ-2 Nunez: Famous last words.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: We gotta shatter the eyes. We'll run along the snake body so we'll be a little safer from the dinos, me and Viv clockwise, Ursula and Angie counterclockwise. If we can take out the eyes, it won't be able to spawn any more, and hopefully it'll move around enough for us to get out.
Φ-2 Marquez: Hopefully. Hopefully?!
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Got anything better?
Φ-2 Marquez: Yeah. We find another accessible vent and scram.
Φ-2 Iglesias: And get crunched by gorillaraptors, or worse.
Φ-2 Marquez: Then we turn em to gravel again.
Φ-2 Iglesias: We don't even know what else is in those, or even where they lead.
Φ-2 Nunez: Much as I want to explore more, I'm with Stella's plan.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Thanks. We all in?
Φ-2 Marquez: Fine.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Then let's roll.
(The team separates; Φ-2 Marquez and Φ-2 De la Cruz begin running clockwise, while Φ-2 Nunez and Φ-2 Iglesias run counterclockwise. The pliosaur turns its head to follow the former, and starts moving, while the Giganotosaurus climbs onto one of the snake's coils.)
Φ-2 Nunez: I've got dibs.
Φ-2 Iglesias: Whatever. Let's bring it down.
Φ-2 Nunez: Peregrine-Rodeo maneuver?
Φ-2 Iglesias: You read my mind.
(As the Giganotosaurus approaches them, Φ-2 Nunez runs straight toward it, with Φ-2 Iglesias flanking on the right.)(The pliosaur surfaces near Φ-2 Marquez and Φ-2 De la Cruz and emits a thick cloud of charged ash from its mouth. Interference from this cloud cuts out the signal from their cameras for eight minutes.)
(Φ-2 Nunez draws the attention of the Giganotosaurus, which turns towards her and bends down to bite her. Φ-2 Iglesias runs toward it and jumps onto its head.)
Φ-2 Nunez: Ride em, cowgirl!
(Φ-2 Nunez begins firing at the instance's left leg, to little effect.)
(Φ-2 Iglesias maintains her grip on the Giganotosaurus' eye ridges but drops her weapon.)
Φ-2 Iglesias: Ursula! Pick it up!
(Φ-2 Iglesias begins kicking the Giganotosaurus in its eye, causing it to stagger backwards. Φ-2 Nunez rolls to avoid being crushed by its foot.)
(Φ-2 Iglesias loses her grip and is thrown to the ground. The Giganotosaurus leans towards her and emits a stream of fire from its mouth, which Φ-2 Iglesias manages to evade.)
Φ-2 Nunez: Gotcha.
(Φ-2 Nunez blasts the side of the Giganotosaurus' face repeatedly with the sonic gun until it collapses into a pool of liquid magma.)Φ-2 Iglesias: Thanks. Now my ears are ringing.
Φ-2 Nunez: It worked, didn't it?
Φ-2 Iglesias: Well, yeah. Let's — agh.
Φ-2 Nunez: What is it?
Φ-2 Iglesias: My hip. I think I landed wrong.
Φ-2 Nunez: Can you walk?
Φ-2 Iglesias: I think so, yeah.
Φ-2 Nunez: Come on. We're getting out of here.
(The ash cloud clears and the body of the pliosaur sinks into the magma.)
Φ-2 Marquez: Yeah! (cough)
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Status.
Φ-2 Nunez: Angie's hip is hurt. Aside from that we're doing really really okay.
(The snake roars and shifts its coils slightly.)
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Well, we've got its attention now.
Φ-2 Marquez: Change of plans. We take this thing out.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: (pause) Are you crazy?
Φ-2 Nunez: Angie can't even fucking walk by herself. There's an opening now, we can carry her out and get the hell out of here. Wasn't that the whole point? We don't even need to go punch its eyes now.
Φ-2 Marquez: This thing is rolling around inside an active volcano! The Foundation's not gonna be able to pour concrete down the hole or whatever in time. It's up to us.
Φ-2 Iglesias: Viv —
Φ-2 Nunez: It's not our problem anymore!
Φ-2 Marquez: The hell it is!
Φ-2 Iglesias: What do you think we are, the Justice League? We were supposed to get in here, look around, and come back. We did that already. We're done.
Φ-2 Marquez: No we're not.
Φ-2 Nunez: I'm not dying for this.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Guys.
Φ-2 Marquez: What fucking good is 'Secure Contain Protect' if we can't even protect our own? What's even the point then?!
Φ-2 Nunez: I'm gonna protect our own, by ignoring you and getting Angie and me out of here. Argue all you want with Stella. You don't have to follow us.
(Φ-2 Nunez turns and walks away, with Φ-2 Iglesias leaning on her shoulder.)
Φ-2 De la Cruz: What's this really about? Talk to me.
Φ-2 Marquez: You can't stop me.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: And you can't stop that. (Φ-2 De la Cruz motions towards the snake.) This is about Rosa, isn't it.
Φ-2 Marquez: You leave my sister out of this!
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Look. I get it. And we're here for you. I know I'd be shattered if anything happened to my brothers.
Φ-2 Marquez: No. You don't get it. You can't.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Maybe you're right! But I do know getting eaten by a giga-snake isn't the way to deal with your sister dying to an SCP!
Φ-2 Marquez: Give me your sniper rifle, Stella.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: No.
Φ-2 Marquez: This is the job. The quicker the snake goes down, the sooner we prevent another Rosa.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: Have it your way.
Φ-2 Marquez: I can give up nothing and save everything.
Φ-2 De la Cruz: You're not nothing. But if I can't save you from yourself, I can't save you from the snake.
Φ-2 Marquez: Goodbye, Stella.
(Φ-2 Nunez and Iglesias reach the tunnel, with Φ-2 De la Cruz catching up to them.)
Φ-2 Marquez: Just you and me, now.
(The snake shifts its coils, blocking the tunnel behind the other teammates.)
Φ-2 Marquez: COME ON!
(The snake looks down at Φ-2 Marquez, and lifts its head higher. Its eyes glow white.)
(Φ-2 fires at one eye with the rifle. The snake roars, and Φ-2 Marquez fires at the bases of several large stalactites, causing them to fall and strike the snake's head and body.)
Φ-2 Marquez: I can do this all day!
(The snake raises its head vertically and shifts its body in a manner similar to that of a cobra. A large, black section of rock on its back becomes visible, and cracks. From this rock, two gargantuan avian wings emerge, composed entirely of obsidian. The snake beats them once.)
(All cameras cut out for 40 seconds. Outside observation confirms imminent eruption of SCP-3798.)
Φ-2 De la Cruz: (indistinct) — so much — (Camera feed shows only yellow-white.)
(The rock covering SCP-3598's vent crumbles, and a lava fountain 1200m high erupts from SCP-3598, along with smaller fountains from the three dikes. Tracking devices show three signals ejected from the third dike. The fourth signal is located over 1km below the location of the hemispherical chamber.)
(5 minutes of loud flapping and indistinct dialogue.)
Φ-2 Iglesias: We're… alive? (Splashing.)
(12 minutes of extraneous dialogue.)
(At this point, Φ-2 Marquez's tracker cuts out. Video feed is distorted beyond recognition, but some audio is discernible.)
Φ-2 Marquez: — not like this. I'll — (static) — just keep fighting — (indistinct) — (clearly, quietly) I will never rest.
(Total signal loss.)
[END LOG]Note: Φ-2 De la Cruz, Φ-2 Iglesias, and Φ-2 Nunez were recovered off-shore, having descended with the assistance of various pterosaur SCP-3798-1 instances. All three suffered major bruising and heatstroke but subsequently made full recoveries. The whereabouts of Φ-2 Marquez are unknown.)
Following the eruption of SCP-3798, all lava flow has ceased. Fernandina Island itself has sunk 200m in elevation, causing seawater to flow into the three dikes and generating large amounts of steam that currently prevent further exploration.
As no new instances of SCP-3798-1 have emerged, SCP-3798 has been tentatively declared Neutralized.
