There’s this interesting ending in this animation I saw of it
where the Fox narrating the entire story was a mother to three children telling it to her young before they slept. And she ended on, "this is what happens to children who run away from home."
Made me think of a GGG article on cannibalism.
And how these entities were destined, all their life, to be eaten by the maternal entity that made them.

Like Gerbils or Hamsters devouring a few young to regain their energy to sustain the litter of other children.

Given that the old lady had to sweep the nooks and crannies of their barn for some flour, they probably didn't have anything else to eat

Could be symbolic of how a predatory creature wins over his meals ultimately by quick wit and sly charisma
whereas the working class villagers who produced the food product don't even get to eat what they made.
