Another story? But it's already so late!

Oh, how could I say no to you?

Fine. One more story. But after that, you go to bed.

Promise?

Pinky Promise?

Okay. Now let's see here.

A long, long time ago, the world was very different than how it is now. You see, it was ruled by these big, tall, hairy monsters who only came out at night. The humans were forced to be the monster's slaves; they built their huge, sprawling cities and maintained their advanced technology. Life under the monsters was rough, but the humans had no other option. They continued doing what they had to for ages.

Until one day, a very special little boy was born. This little boy was brave, bold, and daring. He had had enough of the monsters' treatment. So one day, while they were sleeping, he ran away. He ran as far as his legs could take him, through the forests, through the hills, and through the valleys. He ran until he reached a big, tall tree where he stopped to rest.

It was at this tree that he would meet a new friend.

"Hello," an unusual voice called out to him from just beyond his sight. "How do you do?"

The boy was afraid. He retreated against the trunk of the tree, his tired body refusing to move any further.

"Do not be afraid, little one," the voice said, almost singing to him. "I will not hurt you."

With no option left but to trust the voice, the boy answered; "Hello."

"So you can talk," answered the voice, coming closer and closer. "How do you do?"

"I am tired, for I have run all day," the boy replied.

"That's simply no good. Come with me, little one. I will serve you some tea and you will be good as new."

And the boy stood to see his new friend. It was a man with the head of a proud stag, with horns that reached out into the sky. The boy slowly got up and went alongside his new friend, and the two walked into the woods.

There, the boy saw many more creaturs like his new friend. Many looked like him, some looked like his new friend, and some were unlike anything he could ever imagine. They all looked at him as he went on with his new friend.

"I am scared," said the boy.

"You have no reason to fear us," responded the new friend.

"I trust you," said the boy.

And so, the two came upon the noble stag-friend's home, where he prepared a pot of mint tea for his new human friend. There, the two talked.

"Where do you come from?" asked the new friend.

"I come from a land ruled by giants. They are cruel and force us to build their cities."

"Giants," said the new friend, "don't seem like good friends to keep."

"They aren't," said the boy.

"Worry not, friend. You can stay here with us as long as you like."

And so the boy and his friend drank tea together. They stayed together for many years, until the boy became a man.

"I want to return to my family and free them," said the man. "So that they may live in the forest with us and be friends with all of you."

"Let us help you," said the fair folk, for they had all become friends with the man as the years had passed.

"Thank you, friends," said the man. Ready to leave, he grabbed his spear and started for where he had come from so many years ago. But he was stopped before he could get far.

"Drink from this spring, friend. It will keep you forever strong," said the stag-friend. And so, the man went down to one knee and drank from the sacred spring. He had never felt more powerful in his life.

"Thank you," he said to his friend.

And so, the man and his friends marched on towards the city of the chilldren of the night. They waited atop a hill and looked down at the city, watching all the humans slave away as the giants lazed about. Filled with anger, the man released a war cry, and all the fair folk descended upon the city.

They fought with the fury of the forest, claws of winged beasts, and rugged paws. They took the city by storm, slaughtering the giants wherever they hid. The humans rose, breaking their bondage and joining the fair folk in the fight. They fought for hours, until none of the monsters remained in the city.

"The day is won," said the stag-friend to the man.

But that wasn't the end of the monsters. They would come back to the city in great numbers, attacking the fair folk and humans as they worked to build a new home. Day after day they would come back to the city and lay siege to it.

One day, the man decided he would strike the giants first. He gathered up a small force and set forth beyond the city. He walked until he found a great machine in a vast canyon. This machine was making more of the monsters, raising a small army every time it was used.

But to attack with such a small force was dangerous. And so the man waited. He waited until the army of monsters left to siege the city again before descending on the machine. He and his men looked at the device and found that it would take blood from one of them.

"I will do it," volunteered the man. So he pricked the tip of his finger with his spear and let the blood flow into the machine. Much to his surprise, it started creating humans! An entire army of them, all at his disposal.

"This machine cannot fall into anyone's use. It is too dangerous," said the stag-friend. The man agreed, and so he asked his fair folk friends to bury the machine underground. The other men helped too, moving rocks and boulders until the machine was hidden underground, safe from any who would dare use it.

And so they returned to the city to reunite with the other humans. And for a long time, things were good. The monsters stopped attacking and man and fair folk lived side by side. They taught man the secrets of magic, and man used this to build great cities that would kiss the sky and stretch beyond the horizon.

But one day, a god was born. Not to man or fair folk, but out of metal. This metal god swept up the humans into a frenzied worship. They worked together to forge it a great metal body, which it wore proudly as it would visit its followers across the cities.

The fair folk did not like this metal god. For you see, metal is poison to the fair folk. It would make them sick just to touch it. So one day, the fair folk all gathered together and struck down the metal god with their magic, breaking it's body into many pieces which they scattered across the earth. This upset the humans, who in turn began attacking the fair folk.

Before long, the harmony they lived in was thrown into discord as war wracked the great cities and friends became foes. The man tried to calm tensions but to no avail, for the humans were upset at the loss of their new god and the fair folk were upset at the betrayal of the humans. Eventually, the conflict reached the man and his stag-friend.

"What will you do?" Asked the stag.

"The only thing I can do. I must have peace for my people." The man answered. And so, he used the magic he had learned from the fair folk against them. He summoned forth great flowers that spanned across the entire planet. But their amazing beauty had a secondary effect, you see. The flowers that sprung forth dragged the fair folk into the woods, never to be seen again.

After a day, the flowers all vanished alongside every fair folk in the world. But this wouldn't be the last time the man would magic. He cast another spell to remove the names of all the fair folk he had met so that they would not be spoken of again. But this still was not enough.

The humans were still upset over the loss of their metal god, their fair folk friends, and the war they had fought. It was all top much for them to bear. So the man set out in search for a solution.

He wandered near and far, across land and sea, until one day, he stumbled across the loa of memories in the deepest of oceans.

"What do you seek, my child?" Asked the loa.

"I seek for a way to bring rest to my people," he answered.

"Bring all your troubles to me, and I will eat them. But one thing is certain: one must remember all that has transpired or you will be doomed to repeat it again."

"I will carry this burden," said the man. For he knew no one else should carry the weight of the sins he and his people had committed.

"Very well. Then so it shall be," the loa said. And he opened his great mouth and ate all of humanity's memories up. The war with the monsters, the metal god, the war with the fair folk, he ate everything. Everything except of course, the man's memories.

With that done, the man came back home, only to find that he too had been forgotten. With nowhere else to go, the man went back to the machine he had hidden underground all those years ago and began making men.

And with these men who followed his command, he made a new society. One that was sworn to protect the people who knew not of their history. One that—

Oh. Looks like you're asleep.

Goodnight, James.
