Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5050 is uncontained at the present time. Containment procedures for SCP-5050 are yet to be formally defined and implemented by authorized personnel. Selected Foundation and civilian historians of anomalous matters have been mobilized to form MTF Epsilon-5 "The Federalist Society." Epsilon-5 is to investigate and research SCP-5050's impact on American history and politics and advise the O5 Council as to the necessity and practicality of containing SCP-5050 at a future time.
Description: SCP-5050 is a phenomenon or phenomena which fixes the number of recognized states in the United States Of America at exactly fifty. Documented and undocumented attempts to add states inevitably result in failure, and events (both anomalous and not) that would result in the expulsion or loss of a state or states do not.
SCP-5050's effects became clearly evident only after the addition of the Territories of Alaska and Hawaii to the Union in 1959. However, it is theorized that anomalous events related to SCP-5050 may have been occurring before this year, operating in such a way as to encourage the growth of the number of states to, but not beyond, fifty.
