Item #: SCP-4319

Anomaly Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: No methods of predicting SCP-4319 exist. Given the rare and highly sporadic nature of its manifestation, along with the treatment of the anomaly as an urban legend among ice mining communities, extensive containment is deemed unecessary. Major incidents will be responded to accordingly; incidents involving Foundation ships are of the highest priority.

The SCPS Pale Strider, its equipment, and all ice core samples onboard have been dismantled and incinerated. No civilians are allowed within a 50m perimeter of Capsule 1’s Europan landing site.1 Sudden fluctuations in temperate within the perimeter must be ignored.

Given the results of testing and the current necessity for ice shipments to colonies, the Foundation Medical Department has ruled the ice on SCP-4319-affected ships to be safe for usage.

Description: SCP-4319 is an unknown object that manifests around subjects, typically spacecraft, in Jovian space. No visible light is emitted, with the only means of observation being from infrared heat radiation. Whether SCP-4319 is tangible is unclear — physical contact has not been made, and, while heat matching that of RCS thruster and engine emissions are produced,2 no byproducts of these processes have been noted.

Addendum.4319.1: Record of Confirmed Encounters

Date: [Insert_date]

Overview: SCP-4319 is detected by the SCPS Woven Dilemma while patrolling Europan orbit. Movement towards the object is attempted, but is responded to with identical movements away from the vessel. Demanifestation occurred after ten hours.

Date: [Insert_date]

Overview: Object detected by the Callisto ice hauler LKT Kanella. Persons observing the object for extended durations report abnormal sensations of warmth on their bodies. Demanifestation occurrs after three hours.

Date: [Insert_date]

Overview: Automated rovers, transporting ices cores taken from the Europan crust to Research Outpost Sagan-1, send erratic readings on internal and external temperatures. Reported temperatures reach 35[insert_degree]C. Contact halts several minutes later.

On investigation, the rovers are found to have had their circuitry melted. Ice cores are found to be missing.

Date: [Insert_date]

Overview: Crew aboard the Europan ice hauler SCPS Wisp hear frantic banging sounds from inside the ship cargo holds. Cameras sight SCP-4319 for one second before it vanishes.

Date: [insert_date]

Overview:

90% of the ice stored on the ship is found to have vanished.

Date: [insert_date]

Overview: The [insert_name], exiting Europan orbit with a recently mined payload, encounters SCP-4319.

The events of [date] repeat.

LV.3/4319 CLEARANCE CONFIRMED.

Addendum.4319.2: First Encounter

The first SCP-4319 manifestation was recorded by personnel investigating the SCPS Pale Strider in Europan orbit, following its cessation of distress on [insert_date]. Infrared cameras sighted an unknown heat signature in proximity to entrance crews, who claimed to feel “warm spots” intermittently press into them as they investigated the interior. When entrance crews reported the ship crew to be missing, the heat signature descended towards the Europan surface, reaching and suspending over it.

An empty emergency capsule (Capsule 1) from the Pale Strider was found in the surface region. No objects beyond ice core samples were found in the capsule. Several messages were on the capsule black box, all having failed to send due to the presence of (at the time) liquid water inside radio transmitters. The messages reported an “unbearable warmth,” “slipry movemen”[sic], and “skn slp”[sic].

The capsule airlock had been manually overridden to an open state.

Despite thorough patrol of the region, the usage of infrared tracking imagers, and the scanning of open communication bands for potential emergency signals, none of the Pale Strider crew could be located. Charred remnants of clothing were retrieved from positions scattered across Europa, some on sides of the moon opposite to the landing site. Each were partially sunk into the surface ice.

The only further abnormal event involving the Pale Strider occurred during its post-incident retrieval. The ship's radio arrays registered an inbound message sent over secured Foundation channels, lacking a clear origin. A transcript is below.

Tests conducted on the Capsule 1 ice cores discovered diffuse concentrations of human skin cells and neurons. All neurons retained typical activity. Similar results have been found in the remaining ice stored by SCP-4319-affected ships.
