The SCP Foundation

Basis

  • Anomalies: Objects, entities, phenomena, etc. whose behaviors/properties deviate from the modern understanding of science.
  • Normalcy: The belief that the supernatural isn't real.
  • Not maintaining normalcy will harm humanity physically and psychologically (via the anomalies themselves or by exploitation of the anomalies) and will stifle human progress due to fear.

Mission Statement

  • Secure: Keep anomalies from being accessed by other organizations/installations with pre-established knowledge of the anomalous, and from public use/knowledge.
  • Contain: Quarantine the effects of anomalies.
  • Protect: Keep the public safe from anomalies, and keep anomalies safe from harm.
  • These core tenants can and will overlap.
  • The Foundation contains anomalies until they can be explained with modern science and released or given to other organizations.

Process of being contained

  • Anomalous Item: The designation for an anomaly that has entered Foundation custody. Recorded in the Log of Anomalous Items.
  • SCP: Anomalies deemed to require research. These anomalies are removed from the LoAI and given full SCP documentation. SCPs cannot be returned to the LoAI, and remain SCPs until neutralized or explained. Requirements for becoming an SCP are broad, and include:
    • Requiring specialized containment procedures due to their being.
    • Requiring specialized containment procedures due to Groups of Interest attempting to access them.
    • Having ill-understood effects.
    • Having a significant history.
  • Item #: SCPs are assigned a slot, randomly chosen within a certain pool of numbers at a given time. Neutralized or explained SCPs will have their previous slots open, which are given priority for filling over all other slots. Explained and Neutralized SCPs receive a new Item # (they're previous slot with an appended "-EX" or "-N" respectively).
  • Object Class: SCPs are also designated an Object Class, signifying how difficult an SCP is to contain. Other methods of classifying anomalies (ACS, etc.) have been proposed. The standard object classes are as follows:
    • Safe: Easily containable after sufficient understanding.
    • Euclid: In between Euclid and Keter, SCP is insufficiently understood and Safe-level containment procedures haven't been achieved
    • Keter: Extremely costly or difficult to contain, cannot be comprehended to the point of establishing Safe-level containment procedures.
    • Explained: For Explained SCPs only.
    • Neutralized: For neutralized SCPs only.
    • Esoteric Classes: Used in the rare event that the standard object classes do not apply.
  • Special Containment Procedures: All containment procedures are proposed by a containment specialist and approved by an Ethics Committee liaison.
    • Secure Facilities: Dedicated installations for the containment of an anomaly/multiple anomalies. Generally installed based on anomaly occurrence rate, with sites serving as hubs for containing anomalies found in certain geographic areas. Facilities may also contain one immobile anomaly, which are much smaller in scale.
    • Amnestics: Based on non-anomalous, albeit ahead-of-the-curve at times, scientific principles. Amnestics take various forms, including gases (most similar to Nitrous oxide), injectable drugs (using specific chemicals), and electroconvulsive therapy. All amnestics are ranked alphabetically by effectiveness.
      • Class-A: 6-12 hours
      • Class-B: 1-3 days
      • Class-C: 4-7 days
      • Class-D: 2-3 weeks
      • Class-E: ENUI-5 (Level 5 classified, removes memory of the non-anomalous to make the anomalous normal, partly based in anomalous principles, acts as a Thaumiel-class object)
      • Class W-Z: Mnestics. Used by members of the Antimemetics Division to remember antimemetic anomalies.
    • Thaumiel: SCPs that are utilized in the containment of other SCPs or otherwise serve to benefit the Foundation's mission are given the Thaumiel sub-class, as containment procedures for the object itself still apply. Thus, a Euclid class SCP with Thaumiel attributes would be given the "Euclid/Thaumiel" class, Safe class SCPs the "Safe/Thaumiel" class, and so on. The existence of SCPs having the Thaumiel class, and their role in serving the Foundation's interest, is generally kept to Level 4/5 purview only, to prevent from spies targeting Thaumiel SCPs.
